PANAA SANKRANTI  N NEW YEAR
                                    According to Hindu astronomy, the sun is directly over the equator on two particular days called Mesha Samkranti and Tula Samkranti. On these days, the day and night are of equal duration. It is during the day of Maha Visubha Sankranti that the sun comes in the northern direction of the equator, towards India. Hence in India, this day is considered as the beginning of the solar year. This day of 14th April is celebrated with lots of festivities and religious rituals. Mahabishuba Sankranti, is celebrated as the Oriya New Year . 

This calendar starts with the day when rays of then Sun being to straighten towards the Northern hemisphere and more precisely towards India. This special day is celebrated with lots of festivities and religious rituals.




On this day, religious people offer delicious “Pana” - (a sweet drink made of different types of fruits, water, milk, bela, curd and sugar or jaggery) is offered to the Tulsi Plant, Lord Shiva and their deities in various Temples of the state. People also drink this “Pana” with great enjoyment and fervor. During the festival you will find water pots placed on the roadsides to help the thirsty souls. Water is as also offered to animals and birds with equal enthusiasm. This Sankraniti is also known as Pana Sankranit to Jala Sankranti.


The summer season also commences from this period.

Maha Vishuba Sankranti is noted for subdued celebrations. The highlight of the day is the preparation of sweet drink called ‘Pana,’ which is made from fruits, milk, curd etc. Cultural programs are organized in some regions including literary meetings.

People visit various temples and offer prayers and special pujas. Maha Vishuba Sankranti also marks the end of temple festivals in some regions of Odisha.
